Holton AD located in Suffolk is a 1.5 mega-watt AD plant that is connected to a Bernard Matthews effluent treatment plant. The liquid waste (around 28,000 tonnes) produced by the existing processing factory is pumped into the plant which is then converted into the green gas biomethane.
The biogas produces electricity and heating supplying 16% of the onsite poultry factories energy needs. It has also led to a C02 reduction of 2,800 tonnes per year for the company. The AD plant offers huge benefits as the not only has it provided an environmentally friendly source of power for the factory it has promoted a circular economy.

Location: Beccles, Suffolk
Ellough AD is the biggest gas-to-grid anaerobic digestion plant in the East of England located in Beccles, Suffolk. The plant is fed on 100,000 tonnes of energy crops and sugar beet pulp per year, which is turned into sustainable gas fed directly into the national grid. The green gas produced is enough to heat up to 9,000 local homes and commercial spaces.
The plant supports the local farming community by providing a market for farmers to sell their ‘break crop’ – a secondary crop grown in between main crops to keep the land as healthy and fertile as possible.
As well as producing renewable energy, the plant also generates a by-product called ‘digestate’ a nutrient-rich substance that can be used as a fertiliser replacing man made fertilisers and the impact that they have on the environment from their production.

Sheppey Energy Ltd generates 500KWh via CHP and 450 scmh biomethane to grid.
The plant is fed on 53,500T of energy crops and plant waste per year. All crops are grown by the adjacent farm and the plant waste is sourced within the local area from fruit growers.
This keeps the carbon footprint of the plant to a minimum. Circular economy is gained by digestate being applied back to the rotating land bank of crops grown on the farm for the plant.

Location: Castle Eaton, Swindon
Biomethane Castle Eaton, located in Swindon produces up to 500kW of renewable electricity from locally sourced, sustainable feedstocks grown within 7 miles of the operation.
Biogas, generated from the operation is used to drive 2 x 250kW MAN engines generating sustainable power that is then fed back into the national grid.
The facility also has the ability to store up to 7000m3 of biomethane. This is achieved via three stage compression, achieving 99.1% purity from the biogas generated in the plant for export off site via road tanker to be re-injected into the gas network.
